Inspiration
“This work is inspired by what Gaudi represents for us: Barcelona, the sun and the beach. The essence of the Mediterranean, heat, people, sweat in the beach bar and the coolness of the sea and the tranquility of the water. Most of the time our gaze at Gaudí’s buildings, or outside the pavilions at Finca Güell, has been that of transit because we were heading somewhere. It is not the gaze of the tourist, it is the gaze of the one who lives with Gaudí.
When the possibility of working on this dress came up, the first image that came to mind when thinking of Gaudí was the sea, the flowers and the fact that he was always working at a construction site. So many years walking by the Sagrada Familia and seeing it go up meant Gaudí was in a way still alive. Hence the selection of materials to make the dress: flowers and women’s stockings.
The flowers, the plants that we have always seen and associated with Gaudí, and the stockings filled with foam that represent many things: tentacles like those of jellyfish or octopuses, legs walking, because Gaudí was always walking somewhere, always on the move. The movement and shape is like Gaudí’s architecture, which always seems to be moving and because that stocking is similar to the tarp covering buildings when they are under construction.
Gaudí for us means many things, he is part of us because we live with him and we share the same city. Gaudí is not just an architect for us. Gaudí is crossing Paseo de Gracia to go to the service station; Gaudí is crossing the Finca Güell to go to the university; Gaudí was going jogging in the Park Güell and many more things. That’s why we wanted to make a vital, dynamic, fresh and colorful dress, because Gaudí is that and so much more for us”.
