CANTABRIA
Title: “Odyssey”.
Technique: acrylic, oil and mixed media.

Inspiration

“The work is painted with oil and acrylic, creating textures that evoke psychological aspects; a dynamic set of those emotions and feelings that we keep inside and are not able to see in reality, with a special focus on personal success and our ability to overcome obstacles. Just as Gaudí sought to merge beauty with functionality in his works, in this suit we intend to merge artistic expressiveness with emotional depth, offering observers a visual experience that allows them to feel and connect with their inner world”.

BIO

Irene Pérez (Santander,1996) has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (2018). Her works are a psychological portrait of society. Through figurative and abstract styles, she represents hidden realities inside each of us that in many cases we are not able to externalize. Depression, anxiety or frustration are some of the psychological states that the artist reflects on through textures, often accompanied by the realistic figure of a man in a suit as a symbol of success and power. A way to make visible what’s invisible to our eyes; all those emotions or negative feelings that are really necessary and are part of a process of evolution and learning.

Her work focuses mainly on the disfigurement of the portrait, altering the anatomy and destroying the features. Irene Perez’s work is characterized by very marked and expressive brushstrokes. She defines her portraits as psychological works, which go beyond depicting the physical; she gives visibility the constant pressure of a restless conscience, making changes to the anatomy and altering reality to draw attention to the observer’s inner world.

Her most recent series focuses on the man in a suit as a symbol of success.

It focuses primarily on the concept of “Success” and “Resilience” insisting on the message that falling and failing are as inevitable as they are essential. Accepting and facing adverse situations in order to learn from them is also a triumph.
